குருக்ஷேத்திரத்தில் பாண்டவர்களுக்கும் கௌரவர்களுக்கும் இடையிலான யுத்தத்தில் ஒன்பது நாள்கள் முடிந்து விட்டன. 'ஒன்பது நாள்கள் கடந்தும் பாண்டவர்களை வீழ்த்த முடியவில்லையே!' என்று நினைத்த துரியோதனன், மகாரதராக இருந்த பீஷ்மரிடம் தான் கொண்டிருந்த நம்பிக்கையை இழந்து விட்டான். 'தாத்தா பீஷ்மர், பாண்டவர்களை ஒழிக்க வேண்டும் என்ற உறுதியுடன் போரிடவில்லை' என்றே நினைத்தான். தன் எண்ணத்தை மிகக் கோபத்துடன் பீஷ்மரிடமும் தெரிவித்தான். துரியோதனின் கடுமையைக் கண்ட பீஷ்மரும், அதே கடுமையுடன் மறுநாள் போரில் பாண்டவர்களை அடியோடு வீழ்த்துவதாக சபதம் செய்தார். ஆனால், துரியோதனனோ, '`பாண்டவர்களை வீழ்த்துவேன் என்று சொல்லாதீர்கள். `அவர்களைப் போரில் கொல்வேன்'' என்று சொல்லுங்கள்' என்றான். செஞ்சோற்றுக் கடனைத் தீர்க்க வேண்டுமே என்பதற்காக பீஷ்மரும், `"அப்படியே ஆகட்டும்'' என்று கூறிவிட்டார். அதே தருணத்தில் பாண்டவர்களின் பாசறையில் இருந்த கண்ணன் லேசாகச் சிரித்தான். அவனுடைய சிரிப்பின் காரணம் அங்கிருந்த பாண்டவர்களுக்குப் புரியவில்லை. சற்றைக்கெல்லாம், பீஷ்மர் செய்த சப
